Review: MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack

March 27, 2009

You guys know how I’ve been searching for the best eyeliner ever. Well, I found it. A lot of people have raved about this so if you Google it, you’ll find so many positive testimonials. I’ll just summarize the important points of this product. Here goes!

PROS:

  • True, solid black in one swipe. Very very pigmented.
  • Glides on like a dream. it’s really “fluid” as the name suggests.
  • Doesn’t budge, doesn’t smudge even if you cry or rub your eyes. (God forbid you rub your eyes though. Wrinkles eek!)
  • Easy to remove with garden variety makeup remover! I use Nivea Visage. I just pat the cotton ball gently on my lid and it comes off easily. You can’t believe how this impressed me. I was so worried that it’ll be hard to remove—I hate rubbing my eyes unecessarily just to remove makeup. Even my pencil liners were harder to take off than the Fluidline! Wow.
  • Has a lot of product at 3 grams per pot.
  • Doesn’t dry out easily, at least for a year. This is according to the MAC makeup artists and Makeup Alley reviews.

CONS:

  • Takes an extra minute or so to put on. It’s definitely not as convenient as pencil eyeliner so if you’re looking for that in lining your eyes, this isn’t for you. It can be a real hassle when you’re just starting to use it. I haven’t even perfected using this yet, and I’ve tried like three different kind of eyeliner brushes! I tried a slanted angle brush, a pencil brush, and a round-head brush. The round-head brush works for me best as the thick line enhances the shape of my eyes better.
  • Yes, you need to carry a brush around too, at all times.
  •  The price: P1,100.

Overall, this is a great product since I don’t mind taking extra effort in my makeup routine. That is, when I have the time. I’m planning to buy a pencil eyeliner for my travel kikay kit because let’s face it, you can’t use this when you’re on the go. Price-wise, the product is really worth it. It works beautifully and does everything an eyeliner should better than most. This is highly recommended for those who want the perfect eyeliner and don’t mind the extra effort.

Yes, I’ll definitely buy this again!

Nice, I’ve been looking for a good excuse to visit the local MAC retailer and this just might be it.

I have uneven eyelids so pencils don’t really work well on me, thanks for the recommendation — looking forward to trying it.

Your eyeliner application looks really ace :) It looks so neat and defined. What eyeliner brush do you use/recommend for gel eyeliners?

i’ve tried three: pencil brush, flat angled brush, and a flat round-headed brush. i find that the last is easier to use, but that’s just according to my preference. i want a line that’s not too thin and follows the natural curve of my eyes.

1. pencil brush - for thin lines very close to the lashes. great for a more natural look.

2. flat angled brush - works best with almond, slanted eyes. great for the cat eye look.

3. flat round-headed brush (a small one)- easy to control especially in navigating corners. gives a more dramatic line.

i experimented a lot with these brushes and the verdict is, use one that best suits the look that you’re going for. in terms of ease of use though, i find the 3rd brush more useful. :D

Thanks for the tips! I’ve never tried a flat round-headed brush (I always use a flat angled brush) but I’ll keep a lookout for one now :D

have you tried using it on your waterline? is it safe?

hello! yes i have. :) no irritations so far, but you should test a tiny bit of the product on your waterline first before going full-on.

the brush i purchased to go with my fluid line is the mac 209 eyeliner brush and i’ve had no issues whatsoever with it :)
