Review: MAC Blot Pressed Powder

February 24, 2009

Like most women, I am in a constant battle against oily skin. The Philippines is not really the best environment for keeping one’s face from turning into an oilspill. In fairness to my skin, it’s not as oily as some people’s (I have combo skin) but it still acts up in the middle of the day.

The best solution for this is, of course, blotting. There are two ways to blot: use paper or use face powder. Blotting paper is really cheap in drugstores, and you can even get it for free, har har. I’ve read in a couple of sites that Starbucks tissues are great oil-absorbers. I haven’t tried this personally since I always forget to keep tissues, but if you try this, do tell me.

The second way to blot is using a powder. The thing with typical powders though is that they ruin my makeup. They add extra texture and sometimes even erases my foundation, making it look patchy and uneven. Que horror! So I got the MAC Blot Pressed Powder.

What’s great about this:

  • Has very very minimal coverage. It just blots and it’s almost completely translucent.
  • Keeps the oilies away from my face until lunch time, say I apply it 8am, I still don’t shine by 12noon. I use this on my face after foundation, then I add an extra layer of finishing powder. This sandwich technique works wonders.
  • Has got a lot of product in it, 12 grams.
  • Nice packaging.

What’s not great about this:

  • It’s my most expensive powder, at P1000+
  • Applicator is useless, since I prefer to use a brush.

Some last notes: the shade I got is Medium Dark. The name sounds misleading, but as you can see, the color is pretty light. I went to the MAC website and saw that what they meant by “Medium Dark” is that it’s the color between their medium and dark shades (which by the way don’t look medium or dark at all).

Would I buy this again? Yes, I will. It’s convenient to carry around and it works as it should.

(Also, have you tried playing in an internet casino? Whoop.)

I know what you mean, Guam’s weather is also not conducive to a good “make-up face”. I use Shu Uemura’s Face Powder Matte. It was a wedding gift from a friend and does wonders!

rita: sounds interesting! i bought a pressed powder from maybelline for peanuts (P200 or approximately $4) and it’s ok. i’d like a powder from a high-end brand though, like mac or shu uemura.

I’ve recently started using Mary Kay’s Mineral Foundation (cost-wise it’s $10 less than my regular cream foundation) and let me tell you, I think I found the solution to oily skin. If you know any Mary Kay consultants in your area. You should definitely try it. :)
