Initial Review: Cetaphil

April 6, 2008

I’ve tried a lot of facial cleansers—from Clearasil, Celeteque, Eskinol, Clean and Clear, Pond’s, St. Ives and placenta soap—but my skin keeps on breaking out. I don’t have pimply skin in general but with all the gunk I use on my face, something or other has got to be comedogenic, especially when I use a new product which I haven’t "broken in". Right now, I have some pimples, which suck, so when I went to the mall yesterday I bought Cetaphil for the first time.

For years, I’ve read good reviews about Cetaphil. I don’t remember why I haven’t bought one until now though. My last cleanser is placenta soap (I think it’s RDL), which works really nice for me compared to other expensive brands (it’s only P60/bar if I’m not mistaken). It dries my skin, but it keeps the worse pimples away and dries them up fast. When I need to exfoliate, I use St. Ives Apricot Scrub in Invigorating twice or thrice a week and only at night. So why Cetaphil now? I feel that my skin regimen is adequate, but of course I want to check out other options. Cetaphil is one of the best around according to major magazines and review sites, plus it’s cheap, so there’s no reason not to buy it.

On to the product. The first thing you’ll notice about it is that you can’t lather your face with it. It’s soap-free, lanolin-free and fragrance free. You won’t get that squeaky-cleen feeling you get when you use a typical cleanser. In fact, unlike soapy cleansers, you can apply it straight on your face after removing makeup and then just wipe it off with a soft cloth or tissue! You can opt to rinse it off with water too. My face felt moisturized after washing my face with the product; there’s none of that tight feeling which is a signal that the cleanser dries my skin.

I used this last night and sure enough, my pimples have dried the next morning. I’ll go on using this and I’ll get back to you about its performance. If you’ve tried this, let me know how it worked for you!

DAMAGE: P80 for 60ml/ P224 for 250ml

Would I buy this again: We’ll see! Stay tuned!

Kojic acid soap is very nice too. Kinda like placenta, methinks. That’s what I use now. I’ll watch out for an update cuz I have bad, breakout-y skin as well! :)

Thanks for the testimonial. I have a tube of this at home. I didn’t know that it worked so well. All I knew about Cetaphil was how it was such an old brand that they were being used in my parents’ time.

Anyway once again, thanks!

Peace.

ade: in fairness, you have fairly good skin ha!

ozy: yeah, it is a really old brand nga. it must work since its been around so long, but i have my reservations. will blog about it soon!

i love cetaphil! but you’re right, it doesn’t completely remove all traces of makeup, i still use a separate toner afterwards.

it’s what my derma prescribed when i had nasty breakouts years ago.

i don’t wet my face before i use cetaphil, that way, the creamy solution will not get diluted.

sometimes i get swayed by all sorts of facial cleansers (and their fantastic promises!) but i always go back to my tried and tested:p

Hi, I have been using cetaphil for 13 years. It was recommended by my Dermatologist since my skin is sensitive. Its a very good product and I highly recommend it to everybody since its effective and affordable.

i’ve been using cetaphil for almost 5 years since i have my pimples worst.. it’s prescribed by my derma….I’m using it but not consistent..sometimes, when i discover new soaps and facial cleansers, i got a try on those. Yet after having misery upon using them (neko soap, ponds, etc), i still went back on using cetaphil over and over again. I guess cetaphil’s the one which really works for my skin…

i think i’m alone on this, since i’ve been reading so many good reviews on this product, but my skin doesn’t like cetaphil. i get breakouts and it doesnt control my pimples. i often get breakouts after using it for a couple of days..
