Matching Makeup With Your Outfits

March 31, 2008

This is a question that has been bothering me for some time already: should women match their makeup with their clothes? There are some colors which can go with any outfit like pearly gray/black and neutrals (peach, brown, copper, etc), but even with these ’safe’ colors, we need to consider if neutral makeup with a neutral-colored outfit makes us look too washed out or if smoky eyes make us look like a severely neurotic racoon.

Sarah Michelle Gellar—oh noes!

And then there are bright colors: some popular favorites are emerald green, purple, and blue. Should we match these colors according to what we’re wearing at the moment? Some people may find it over-the-top, especially if the eyeshadow used is metallic or glittery. The word "tacky" comes to mind!

However, I think there are no hard and fast rules for matching makeup with clothes. Personally, I wear my eyeshadow with the color of my top sometimes, but not in the exact same shade. Or if I’m wearing blue eye shadow, I wear a purple outfit. I guess it all depends on my mood, in the end. I wear whatever I feel good in and that’s that! Right girls?

What do you think? Should you match your clothes with your makeup? Do you match your clothes with your makeup?

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

To answer the questions in your post here, I dont match makeup to clothes… I use eye colors to show off my blue eyes, and wear the same (or really similar) look nearly every day. I’ll do something different for special occasions, but for work I usually stick to the colors that really highlight my eye color.

I’ve got close to Green eyes so I wear a lot of purple shadows. If its night I’ll wear a smoky black pencil blended with a darker purple in the corners.
If I’m after more of a day time look I’ll wear a charcoal pencil, a mid purple for main colour and then lighten it with say, a dusky pink.
I’ve recently acquired a stack (literally 8) of Bellapiere mineral makeup colours, and its a rainbow stack. All metallic shades, from yellow at the top, through pink, purple, green, blue down to dark purple so I’m experiementing a bit more.
Not that I didn’t have other colours, I’ve got MAC and Napolean colours in my makeup box already so not a stranger to stronger colours.
I like to use eyeshadow that matches my clothes, I think of it like an accessory like earrings or a bangle. :)

Saturday Sept. 13 is my 30th birthday. I am going out and wearing a deep purple dress with silver. I never really wear much make up. I like to keep it in natural tones. So to glam it up, what shades of shadow do I wear, and with what color lip stick to go. I’m tring to be more girly! hahaha Im just more of the natural beauty type of girl.
