A Nifty Way To Organize Makeup
November 20, 2009

While I was searching for a hat at the SM department store, I found a really cool solution to one of my most persistent makeup problems: organization!
This organizer is so awesome. Now I can store my makeup where I can easily see them - no more rummaging for a pot of eyeliner in the morning when I’m running late! Since each type of makeup has its own space, I don’t have to worry about spilled powder or overflowing lip gloss ruining the packaging. Of course, my precious stuff is protected from dust and grime. Best thing? This organizer is only P300 at the accessories area of SM department stores
Top part, L-R: MAC Fluidline, MAC Studio Finish Concealer, Shiseido Supplist, Shu Uemura Glow On, Nars blush, Mineraux Beach Tan Bronzer, In2It brow powder, The Body Shop lip balm, Chapstick, lipsticks from various brands
L-R: Lip glosses (Smashbox, The Balm, Bath and Body Works, ELF), Clinique mascara, Nichido lip liner, Ellana mineral makeup (foundation and finishing powder), Dollface brown gel eyeliner, Artdeco concealer, In2It foundation, Lise Watier liner sealant, About Face mineral makeup
Pond’s, of course!
I know it doesn’t look a lot, but you may know that I’m the kind of makeup enthusiast who buys only what she needs. I have enough colors to last me a lifetime but they’re all in palettes - will post a pic soon. As of now, these are just the items I regularly use so the other stuff I have are safely stored somewhere else. Hope you found this helpful!
Find Your Perfect Match With Clinique
November 19, 2009I’m sure that, like me, you’re already jaded about finding the perfect foundation. There’s just so many factors to consider - your skin type, undertone, acidity, shade, and personal preference - that it sounds almost hopeless to find a foundation that seems to be made just for you. I totally know how that feels. Before I got my HG foundation, I had to do a lot of research, soul and bank account searching.
Foundation madness, from L-R: super oily to oily skin (types 3 and 4), combination skin (types 2-3), and dry skin (type 1)
Well, I wish I found out about Clinique foundations sooner. They’ve got something for every skin type and problem! The shade choices are not as extensive as MAC’s but the quality is definitely better. I don’t want to speak too early since I’ve just started to roadtest the foundations they gave me (Superfit Makeup and Perfectly Real) but can I just say that I’ve been looking at my face all day? The foundations can rival the Shiseido Supplist I just got! I don’t want to speak too soon but it looks that Clinique foundations are Holy Grail material.
Anyway, here are pics from yesterdays fun event!
The guests were asked to take a short quiz on the iMac to determine what type of foundation is best for them. Factors were the skin’s reaction to the sun, oiliness, preferred foundation type and so on.
After the quiz, we were sent to the makeup artists. They swatched the three closest shades on our jaw.
Clinique foundations: from the right is the Clinique Supermoisture Makeup, Perfectly Real Makeup and Superfit Makeup
From the left is the Perfectly Real compact makeup (rectangular pan), Superpowder Double Face Makeup (round pan), and Superbalanced Makeup (in the glass bottle)
As you can see, Clinique’s foundation range is a pretty solid one, targeting our major skin problems. They prescribed the Superfit makeup to me since I’m oily, but they also gave me a refill of the Perfectly Real foundation, their newest line. I’ll be posting an in-depth review of both very soon. If you want to find more info on their other foundations, check out this post. It has a short description and price of each.

If you want more info though, you should read this. Review: Shiseido Supplist Poreless Foundation
November 17, 2009I have finally ended my search for the best foundation in the history of forever.
Foundation winner! I don’t even have concealer on today! MAC FL in Blacktrack, NARS Super Orgasm, Clinique Extreme Pink lipstick
I read about the Shiseido Supplist Poreless Foundation (whew) over at the GirlTalk makeup forums. Everyone was raving about so I got curious! The next time I visited a Shiseido counter I just had to get one for myself. Since I bought mine in Duty Free, the refill only cost $36 while the case was $12. I read though that this foundation is P2650 in malls but if you compute, it’s only a ~400 peso difference.
So, what makes this foundation awesome?
- Flawless finish. It looks very natural, with a slight translucent effect. I don’t look or feel like I have heavy makeup on. I don’t have big pores so I can’t tell you if it makes me look “poreless”, but I can assure you that it can blur out your bumps and uneven patches well and make your skin look Photoshopped.
- Coverage is light to medium. If you want something more heavy, you won’t have any problem layering it since it doesn’t get powdery at all.
- Long-lasting. Doesn’t fade, doesn’t crease or cake.
- Controls my oilies well. It’s 12:04 PM and I haven’t felt the need to retouch yet. Had this on since 8am. I have combination skin though.
- I didn’t break out at all!
- Comes with a sponge that works well in applying the foundation. I suggest use it wet, since I get extra-flawless coverage if I use that technique.
- Elegant pink packaging. It’s also great that the compact comes with a big mirror and holes at the back to air out the sponge.

Coverage - medium. Finish - matte. Skintype - normal to oily.
What I don’t like about it:
- The price! But I don’t know, the foundation is really good so I’d have to say it’s worth every centavo.
- Limited shades. I think there’s only 5 or 6 shades available here in the Philippines and only for those who have fair to medium skin. I got o40, and it’s a little light on me. It’s ok though, it darkens a few hours afterwards since I’m acidic.
- You have to buy the refill and compact separately. How annoying is that?
Bottomline is, this is the best foundation I’ve ever tried in my life. I will definitely buy it again! Good thing I just have to get the refill next time.

The Ukay Manila Store at the Digital Filipino Web Awards
November 16, 2009Thanks to Janette Toral and the Digital Filipino Club for giving the Ukay Manila Store its first ever award! Lauren and I were so thrilled when we found out about it last Monday. On such short notice we managed to make a nice presentation on our best practices. It was presented to such an intimidating crowd of businesspeople, publishers, and advertisers so we were a little nervous but we pulled through. Even if we ran out of time.
Anyway here are some pics during the awarding at Hotel Intercontinental, Makati taken by Tita Noemi.
Lauren’s dress is so nice! I normally wouldn’t pick something like this for the store, but I thought that it was too interesting to miss.
With Carlo Ople of Friendster and Vince Golangco of When In Manila
Shortly before the awarding. Getting a bit jittery.
Lauren rocked the stage!
Iz serious biznes
Nice glass trophy
Group pic, of course
It goes without saying - this wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for YOU, who supported the Ukay Manila Store all the way. Thank you so much!
Review: Shu Uemura Glow On Blush
November 12, 2009I’ve been looking high and low for a nice peachy bronze blush for some time now. I wanted a change from the pink NARS Super Orgasm blush that I’ve been using for almost a year since it’s nakakasawa and also because pink cheeks don’t really go well with smoky eyes (which I do often). I seriously considered getting another NARS blush, but since I wanted to try another brand, I turned to Shu Uemura.

Shu Uemura Glow On Blush in P Amber 83
So why did I pick Shu Uemura? Well, I really wanted to try something from the brand since I’ve been reading rave reviews of their products everywhere. I’ve also been made up by a certified Shu makeup-artist before for the eBay Fashion Challenge (a styling contest me and my friend joined last year as finalists, of which Shu Uemura was a sponsor) and I was very impressed with the products the MUA used on me.
One such product was the Japanese brand’s Glow On blushes.
P1,500 at Shu Uemura counters in malls, $25 at Duty Free, $21 at the Shu Uemura US website
What I love about this product:
- Highly pigmented. It only takes one or two swipes on the pan to get good color payoff. I got the P Amber 83 shade, a peachy-bronze that looks natural on my NC35 (light medium) cheeks.
- Awesome staying power. It can honestly rival NARS in this dapartment! It doesn’t fade for 4 hours on me. After that, it sort of melts on my skin, but there is still an obvious color until I remove my makeup at the end of the day.
- Soft, silky, flawless finish. I like how it gives my cheeks that glow-from-within look, like I’m not even using blush.
- 5 grams/.17 oz in the pan! That doesn’t sound much, but for pigmented blushes like this 5 grams will last you more than a year’s worth of daily use. I’ve been using my NARS blush (almost 5g too) everyday for 10 months and I haven’t even hit pan yet.

Makeup Shopping at Duty Free Fiesta Mall
November 8, 2009
So what did I find there? There was a whole half of the place dedicated to makeup and skincare. Luxury/department store brands such as Chanel, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Shieseido, Shu Uemura, Smashbox, Clarins, L’Occitane and The Body Shop have counters at the mall. Drugstore brands such as Maybelline, L’Oreal and Revlon are there. There are other brands that aren’t that popular here in the Philippines so I didn’t catch their names. They were on a 40% off sale though.
Picture from the Duty Free website
As expected, the makeup at Duty Free is cheaper than those sold outside in malls such as SM, Robinson’s, Shangri-la, Trinoma, and so on. I’d say they’re cheaper by about 20% to 40%. The drugstore makeup’s price difference isn’t very big but the more expensive brands have a marked price difference. For example, I read that the Shu Uemura Glow On blushes go for as high as P1,800 (GASP) in the Philippines. I got mine in Duty Free for only $25. How awesome is that?
What I got: Shiseido Supplist Poreless Powder Foundation refill in 040 ($36), Shiseido case ($12), Smashbox Wish Eye Palette ($42), and Shu Uemura Glow On in Amber ($25). Reviews to follow soon of course! Anyway, I hope to come back here next year to raid the makeup aisles - hopefully, at my dad’s expense again. Haha. There’s nothing better than free, tax-free makeup don’t you think? I love my dad!
8 Things I Wish I Knew When I Was Just Starting My Makeup Hobby
November 7, 2009It’s been almost two years since I started collecting makeup and studying its application. It was a fun journey but there were a lot of mistakes that I wish I didn’t make - money wasted on products that didn’t work, horrible foundation mishaps, stuff like that. If I can go back two years and give myself makeup advice, this is what I would say.
1. Prioritize good skin. No matter how awesome your Shieseido or Chanel foundation is, bad skin still looks bad. The makeup will not sit well on your face and it will feel uncomfortable. Sure, it can make your skin look better than it actually is, but if your skin is bad in the first place, the improvement will not be significant at all. Hunt for the best skincare system that works for you before hunting for makeup.

4. Don’t forget the lip balm! Chapped lips are a sight for sore eyes.
5. Don’t buy makeup mindlessly. Don’t get something just because it’s cheap, or because everyone has it, or because the packaging is nice. If you have a bottomless pocket, sure, knock yourself out, but buying products and not fully maximizing them is very senseless. Likewise, don’t build a makeup collection by buying cheap, drugstore makeup and then discarding them for nicer, more expensive makeup. Why? Because you’ll be wasting money you should have just saved for the good stuff. There are products that are so great that they’ve become cult favorites, icons in the makeup world in their own right. You want to get these first and develop your own standards for future purchases. More on this later.
6. Rape makeup testers. Don’t be shy, help yourself. That’s what they’re there for! Swatch the product first on your skin so you can see their effect. More often than not, makeup looks a lot different applied than when they were in a container. It’s different for everyone since skin color and tone affects how the color will look on you.
7. Research the product online if you’re unsure about something. Similarly, follow beauty blogs/websites for makeup news, reviews, and tutorials. If you don’t know which yet, Makeup and Beauty Blog and Temptalia are two of the best beauty blogs in the history of forever! Check out my side bar for other great blogs here in the Philippines. They have a lot of informative posts on the Philippine beauty scene.
8. This is probably the best advice I can give you: instead of buying cheap makeup and then eventually buying better, more expensive ones because your standards have improved - why not go about it the other way? Buy the best makeup first and then work your way down. That way, you have a developed sense of quality, meaning you know what to expect from your makeup instead of just guessing what it should or shouldn’t do. Here’s an analogy: you thought dial-up internet was ok, it wasn’t fast, but it’s reasonable for the cost. Then you upgraded to DSL. It’s more expensive, but it’s more convenient and time-saving! In fact it’s so good, you’ll never go back to dial-up EVER. Like that.
Well, I will elaborate on #8 more in the very near future since this is a subject close to my heart. In the meantime, I hope you found these tips helpful! I’ll probably be adding more along the way as I improve my makeup skills and collection. If you’ve got any tips, please feel free to share them in the comments section.
New Header!
November 5, 2009The old header of Project Vanity is too low-res so I decided to make my own. I made this using Pixelmator:
It’s nothing special, nothing spectacular. I used a photo I took myself and just added some layers. What do you think?
Review: Dollface 15-color Neutral Palette
Do you love shimmery neutral eyeshadows? I do! Shimmer keeps eyes looking bright and awake while neutral colors give eyes that fresh, not-too-made-up look. This is why I got excited when Pearl alerted me about one of her newest palettes, the 15-color Neutral Palette.
Why I LOVE this palette:
- Pigmented, for neutral eyeshadows! One or two swipes should do the trick
- The eyeshadows are fine and not chunky. They’re easy to apply and I don’t even use a base or foil them.
- The shimmery effect is not the craaaazy kind - they’re just right and and very work-safe
- Pans are about the same size as a five-peso coin. This’ll take forever to finish up.
- Great for girls on the go - it’s just 4×6 inches so you can easily fit it in a purse or a slim bag. It’s very light!
- Really cheap. It’s a steal for P650!
What I don’t like about this palette:
- Some colors look similar at first glance, such as the pinks. You’ll need to look closer to see the nuances. The coppers/bronzes/golds look similar in the swatch, but trust me, they look a lot different in person.
- As you can see in the swatches, the dark colors on the pan aren’t dark at all once applied. They’re true neutral colors, so you can’t use the dark plum and coppers on their own for crease colors. They’re great for added dimension, but if you want a defined crease, these aren’t the eyeshadows to use.
Verdict? This is a great product to have around when you need quick, fuss-free eye makeup before leaving for work or when you need a quick fix while in a car or a plane. I’ve been using this almost everyday lately when I feel too lazy to think about color combinations or blend eyeshadows.I just pick two coordinating shades (I love the white gold in the 3rd row, 2nd column with the gold in the 2nd row, 3rd column), pat them on with a fluffy eyeshadow brush and I’m good to go! This is such a time-saver without requiring me to sacrifice nice eye makeup.

Review: MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation
October 30, 2009
The thing that lured me into buying this foundation is the sweet promise of convenience. I love mineral makeup but there are just days when I don’t feel like having to deal with the messy loose powder or the melting coverage come noon. I’ve looked at reviews high and low and it seems like, for my budget and preferences, the MAC Studio Fix is the best there is.

Price is P1600 and it’s available in MAC counters located in MOA Marionnaud, Glorietta, Rockwell, and Shangri-la
This is one of MAC’s best-selling products and is one of the most reviewed online. I’ll just give you a summary of its pros and cons and finally, if it’s really worth your money (it’s P1,600 after all!). Full review and close-up pics after the jump. (more…)
The Clothes I Live In
October 29, 2009I was doing some boards for the Ukay Manila Store when I thought of a neat idea - why don’t I do an inspiration board of what I wear everyday? I’ve posted some nice outfits here before, but I don’t dress like that everyday. There are days when I just want to relax and not worry if my vagina or stray boob is peeking out of my dress. I value silhouette, function, and simplicity when it comes to the clothes I wear. The less fussy, the better.
That’s my style as of the moment.

So, right now, I’m really digging cuffed jeans. I like the informal, carefree, effortless impression that it gives to the whole look. I love plain, basic tops - one can do so many things with them! I’m also partial to miniskirts. Right now my “everyday” skirts include a gray mini and a black tulip skirt. As for outerwear, I have this awesome black blazer that fits me so well and is done in nice fabric. I abuse my yellow cardigan, as well as my black faux leather PVC jacket. I’ve recently unearthed a faux leather double breasted jacket - it’s sooo cool!
As for shoes, I rotate a gladiator wedge from People R People, cutout platform shoes from Primadonna, beige platform sandals, black ballet flats from B Club, and these cute pink pumps from an Anonas thrift store. I find that aggressive heals can really add style points to any plain outfit.
How about you, what do you usually wear?
Estee Lauder’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign
October 27, 2009My grandmother from my Dad’s side of the family died of breast cancer. My great grandmother from my Mom’s side had her right breast cut off because of, you guessed it, breast cancer. This is why I can’t help but feel a little worried that I might soon be facing the same disease, given the fact that both sides of the family are prone to this type of cancer.
Gloomy thoughts aside, it’s great to hear that the Estee Lauder Companies have taken up the cause of breast cancer prevention for women all over the world.
This October 2009, over 70 countries including the Philippines will participate in The Estee Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and unite under one common theme: “World Pink. World Without Breast Cancer. Wear a Pink Ribbon, Make a Difference.”
The Estee Lauder Companies’ Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Campaign was established in 1992 by Evelyn H. Lauder, Senior Corporate Vice President of the Estee Lauder Companies, Inc. and Alexandra Penney, then Editor-in-Chief of SELF magazine. The tandem co-created the Pink Ribbon, which today has become the ubiquitous symbol for breast health. Since then, The Estee Lauder Companies has raised millions of dollars for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) which is dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer in our lifetime. By the end of 2009, the BCA campaign will have so far distributed over 85 million Pink Ribbons and millions of informational brochures on breast cancer emphasizing the importance of breast health and early detection.
Don’t forget: breast cancer can easily be avoided if you know the tell-tale signs. Lizz wrote an awesome post on breast cancer facts and stats just a few hours ago - I strongly encourage you to read and absorb. For your sake.
FOTD: Winged Eyes and Red Lips
How’s your day? Mine is, well, the usual. I’m really sleepy - maybe I’ll grab tea later at Coffee Bean. Hm. Anyway, today’s look is all about simplicity and polish. I’m wearing a loose white shirt, bleached, cuffed jeans and beige platform sandals. To complete the look, I painted on cat eyes, thick lashes and shocking red lips.
For eyes: MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack, Clinique High Impact Mascara
For the lips: Chapstick Lip Balm, Dollface 32 lip color palette
Want to know how to get the perfect winged eyeliner? Use concealer to erase imperfections! I use a flat concealer brush to line over the eyeliner, if you get what I mean. This technique can also help you achieve sharply defined lines.

Review: Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleansing Lotion
October 23, 2009I finally found a makeup remover that’s cheap and works better than what I used before. Tadah!

Originally P364, bought for P254 on sale
I’ve been using the Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleansing Lotion this past week and I must say that I’m really impressed. I see this product in beauty aisles all the time but never ventured to try it. Why? Because I had a great thing going for me in the form of the Nivea Visage Cleansing Milk, and at a cheaper price too! There was no reason for me to change my makeup remover. However, I saw this Neutrogena item on sale at 30% off so I nabbed it immediately. I’ve always been curious about it to begin with.
So is it good? It’s definitely better than Nivea. This is more fluid (meaning, it’s more watery than lotion-y) so you need only a medium pea-sized drop to rid half your face of makeup. It only takes a couple of swipes using a cotton pad to remove my heavy duty concealer, foundation, eyeliner and pigmented eyeshadows. Once I wipe everything off, the after-feel isn’t sticky at all; I noticed that my face feels clean and fresh. It doesn’t sting my eyes too, which is a huge plus. I love it!
Just a heads up though, this isn’t very good in removing mascara. I usually just try to wash mascara off (gently!) with facial soap and then use makeup remover on the remaining smudges.
Will I buy this again? Yeah! If it’s still on sale.
Paul Smith Rose Summer Edition
October 21, 2009Do you like roses? I do! I love the light, distinctive scent as well as the notion of romance that comes along with this particular flower. Roses smell of love, light, and joy. Don’t you agree?
Paul Smith Rose Summer Edition has all the elegant-yet-edgy appeal of the original, it also echoes the fabulous facets of the season, when excitement meets relaxation, when freshness meets sensuality. At the heart of the original Paul Smith Rose fragrance is the Paul Smith rose, cultivated by an English botanist - a gift to Paul from his wife. Green apple is added. It’s juicy and clean. Combined with a dash of pink pepper, the first spritz delivers a sparkling, sherbetty hit.

Effervescent. Enlivening. Crisp . Combined in the heart notes are Bulgarian Rose absolue, magnolia and violet. These are intensely feminine. Seductively so. And they dry down to a sophisticated, woody base of amber, cedarwood and white musk.
As promised, this designer perfume smells like real roses - just right, not too heavy and slightly musky. The scent also lasts all day even with just a few spritzes. Rose was released just last March so you can still find this in fragrance bars and of course, in Paul Smith stores (I only know of the one in Greenbelt).
FOTD: Plums and Pinks
October 19, 2009Today, I woke up feeling bright and fresh. Of course, I have to reflect that feeling for today’s look! In fact I was so busy putting on makeup I didn’t notice that there was an intensity 3 earthquake in Makati. It could also be that I’m just oblivious to earthquakes in general since I also didn’t feel an intensity 6 earthquake when I was at our 27th floor office in Ortigas. Haha.
For the face I used: MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NC 30, MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation in NC 30, Ellana Minerals finishing powder in Espresso Con Panna, NARS Super Orgasm
For eyes: In2It brow powder, Dollface 15-piece Shimmery Neutral Palette (I used the white gold shade on the inner lid, then a plum shade on the outer lid topped by a darker shade of plum to contour), Dollface 28-color neutral palette (highlighted browbone with a beige matte color), Dollface Gel Eyeliner in Brown
For lips: Chapstick lip balm, Dollface 32-color lip palette (6th column, 2nd row pink shade), Smashbox Lipgloss in Crystal
I’m loving this color combo - it’s very flattering on my skintone. I also like the finish of the Dollface shimmery eyeshadows since they’re quite fine and apply seamlessly. Did you notice I used only Dollface stuff on my eyes? I actually stopped buying eyeshadows altogether since I’ve got the 88 shimmer palette, 28 neutral palette, and 15 shimmery neutral palette. I have all the colors I can ever need as of the moment.
How about you, what are your favorite color combos? Palettes? What look are you wearing today? Spill!
I’m In UNO Magazine This Month!
October 17, 2009It’s not what you think though, haha. Jayvee Fernandez wrote a cool feature on bloggers for the October issue of UNO with Ornusa Cadness on the cover. I haven’t finished reading this yet but so far I’m really impressed by how classy and suave this magazine is. It’s not just flesh flesh flesh - this magazine is for the man who doesn’t think with his dick. The creative direction and the photography is also stunning. Good job team UNO!

My first time to buy a men’s magazine! This one is huge-ass, people.
Yay! We’re on page 94. Ive hung out with some of the bloggers featured here before - Noelle, Jen, Bim, Fritz, Rico, and Sasha - and you know what makes them stand out? What makes them successful? They love what they do. Also, in a natural, instinctive way, they know what they’re doing.
Librarian hot, lol. Si Jayvee talaga! Anyway, the Ukay Manila Store will be featured on Smart Parenting’s December issue so watch out for that as well.
